The SAVE project at MUST conducted an industry engagement exercise on February 7, 2025 to gather insights on a proposed research project.
The project aims to improve Macadamia production among smallholder farmers in Neno and Mwanza districts.

According to Dr Tiwonge Gawa, the research project addresses the challenges of low Macadamia production and processing in the districts.

These challenges are due to limited resources and poor farming practices.
Dr Gawa said that the project will equip farmers with knowledge on best practices for treating Macadamia, restoring soil fertility, and exploring alternative products from Macadamia.

The project will help farmers learn about the various products that can be derived from Macadamia, such as cooking oil, butter, and charcoal.

This will improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and contribute to Malawi's economic growth.

Daniel Nyando, Agriculture Enumerator for Mwanza and Neno Smallholder Macadamia Farmers Cooperatives, highlighted the challenges faced by farmers.
These include lack of access to proper markets and inadequate machinery to customize their produce.

However, Nyando expressed satisfaction with the research proposal, saying it will enhance and uplift Macadamia farming in the districts and the country.

The success of the project will have a positive impact on Malawi's economy.

Macadamia farming provides income opportunities for smallholder farmers and contributes to the country's agricultural exports.

By addressing the challenges faced by farmers and exploring innovative solutions, the research project will improve the productivity and profitability of Macadamia farming in Malawi.
