MUST City campus in Blantyre on April 18, 2026, came alive with colour, culture, and energy during the celebration of Chinese Language Day, an event aimed at strengthening cultural and educational ties between Malawi and China.
The event, supported by UNESCO, attracted students and guests who enjoyed a rich display of Chinese culture, including traditional tea ceremonies, martial arts performances, Chinese music, and lessons on the history behind Chinese characters.
The atmosphere reflected a strong spirit of cultural exchange and learning.
Speaking during the event, Dr Damazio Mfune from the Confucius Institute at the University of Malawi, emphasized the importance of language in promoting development and cooperation between nations.
He noted that the Institute has established 22 teaching centres across Malawi over the past 10 years.
However, he expressed concern that few students progress to higher levels of Chinese language proficiency, encouraging learners to take advantage of scholarships and other opportunities available.
Dr Atikonda Mtenje-Mkochi, Executive Dean for the Bingu School of Culture and Heritage at MUST, described the event as a reflection of the growing friendship between Malawi and China.
She said MUST is already collaborating with Chinese universities through student exchange programs and is planning to expand joint research initiatives.
Students also shared their experiences. Francis Jomo Kanyemba, a second-year student in Language, Communication and Culture, said the event was about mutual learning.
โ€œItโ€™s about sharing cultures. We learn from them, and they learn from us,โ€ he said, while encouraging more students to take up Chinese language studies.
By the end of the day, students left not only with memories of tea, music, and performance, but also a deeper appreciation of a language that continues to open doors to global connections and opportunities.
