MUST has taken a bold step in strengthening student leadership with the introduction of a Student Parliament, an initiative designed to transform how student governance is practiced on campus.

The idea behind the Student Parliament was inspired by the need to raise the standard of student governance to match the universityโ€™s strong academic reputation.

According to Kenny Chapita, a fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Geo-information and Earth Observation Sciences student and Speaker of the MUST Students General Assembly, the university is not only a place for academic excellence, but also a space where future leaders should be shaped through practical experience.

The Student Parliament creates a structured and continuous platform where studentsโ€™ concerns can be raised, discussed, and supported by clear evidence.

Unlike the General Assembly, which meets occasionally, this new system allows for more consistent engagement between student leaders and the wider student body.

At its core, the initiative aims to promote effective and accountable governance. It will also serve as a platform for collecting and analysing real student concerns, ensuring that issues presented are not just opinions, but are backed by facts.

This approach is expected to enable easy push for meaningful and lasting solutions.

The Student Parliament will be made up of class representatives who will act as members of Parliament, alongside the Students' Representative Council (SRC), the Speaker, and the Leaders of the Opposition.

This structure will allow for oversight, constructive feedback, and fresh ideas to improve student life at MUST. It will also give students a better understanding of how decisions are made within the university, including leadership, discipline, and administrative processes.

The Student Parliament will handle a wide range of issues affecting students, including academic matters, welfare, learning conditions, and access to resources.

It will also serve as a space for students to present innovative ideas that can improve the university experience.

For now, participation will mainly involve class representatives, as well as selected student leaders. These representatives will be responsible for presenting well-organized concerns from the students they represent, ensuring that every voice is heard in a meaningful way.

Looking ahead, the vision is to make the Student Parliament a fully established and continuous body within MUST.
There are also plans to have parliamentary sessions covered live by student publication teams to promote transparency and increase engagement.

This initiative reflects the innovative spirit that MUST continues to instill in its students.

By creating platforms like the Student Parliament, the university is not only producing graduates but nurturing thinkers, problem-solvers, and leaders ready to make an impact both locally and globally.
