For Alinafe Mtukula, innovation is not only about creating something new but recognising the value in what already exists within communities and transforming it into solutions that improve lives.

A 2022 graduate of MUST with a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices, Alinafe has turned his passion for indigenous resources into action through his agro-processing business, which he founded in 2023.

Through his brand, Nyasa Castor Oil, Alinafe adds value to locally grown castor beans by processing them into high-quality castor oil, creating a market for indigenous products while supporting local livelihoods.

His work demonstrates how indigenous knowledge, entrepreneurship and innovation can come together to create sustainable economic opportunities.

Since graduating, Alinafe has remained committed to using locally available resources to develop solutions that respond to community needs.

His business has created employment opportunities and inspired others to see the potential in Malawiโ€™s natural resources.

Beyond castor oil production, Alinafe is currently developing a rice organic fertilizer project aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

His journey reflects the impact of MUSTโ€™s vision of producing graduates who do not only seek opportunities but create them.

He is a reminder that when ideas meet purpose, local resources can become powerful drivers of change.
