Innovation took centre stage on 8th July, 2026 as Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) commemorated World Accreditation Day under the theme of โ€œInnovation, Trust and Sustainability through Accreditation.โ€

Held at MBS Auditorium in Blantyre, the event brought together leaders from government, industry, healthcare institutions, academia and the private sector to celebrate the role of accreditation in promoting quality and sustainable development.

Representing MUST, Hope Matemba and Cedric Mmangisa, attracted attention with their projects.

Hope exhibited Mavericks Ultraviolet Sterilizing Robot, an innovative system developed to enhance infection prevention through automated ultraviolet disinfection.

On his part, Cedric presented Smart Kangaroo Mother Care System, a solution aimed at supporting neonatal care through smart monitoring technologies.

Exhibitions were followed by official remarks and presentations, emphasizing importance of accreditation in ensuring quality, safety and trust across various sectors.

MUST's contribution to the event extended beyond the exhibition floor as Nelson Mwenifumbo, from MUST Design Studio, delivered a presentation on โ€œInnovations supporting Malawi's development.โ€

He emphasized the critical role of innovation hubs such as the Design Studio in transforming ideas into impactful technologies while maintaining quality through standards and accreditation.

A major highlight of the day was the student innovation pitch session, where MUST students presented their projects to a wider audience.

Alinane Kalemba, a MUST student, presented NoeHearScreen, a low-cost Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) newborn hearing screening device developed to address challenges of early hearing loss detection in low-resource healthcare settings.

On his part, Syton Mphaka, another student, presented a Flood Monitoring System designed to improve disaster preparedness through real-time flood detection and monitoring.

The climax of the event was through awards of excellence in quality management and innovation.

MUST student innovators received Certificates of Recognition and K500,000 cheques each for outstanding contributions.

Participation of MUST at World Accreditation Day reflected its growing reputation as a hub for innovation, research and technological advancement.
