The Rice Institute of Global Health Technologies (Rice 360), in partnership with the MUST Design Studio, have organized a five-day faculty development workshop focusing on instructional strategies to improve learning.

The program, which runs from July 13 to 17, 2026, is being held in Blantyre and is attended by faculty members from all schools within MUST.

Funded by the Lemelson Foundation, the workshop aims to enhance teaching effectiveness and student engagement by adopting innovative, learner-centered pedagogies and improving communication skills.

The initiative is facilitated by distinguished faculty members from both the US and Africa within the Invention Education (IvE) network.

Speaking during opening ceremony, Rice 360 program coordinator, Williams Baah, expressed optimism, noting that the training will provide vital paradigm shift from passive to active learning.

He said Rice 360 has a distinguished partnership with MUST and played a crucial role in founding the MUST Design Studio to support students to do high-impact research.

On his part, Nelson Mwenifumbo, MUST Design Studio Lead and workshop organiser, said the initiative aligns with the university's broader objective to elevate instructional standards and equip graduates for 21st Century challenges.

"We are eager to cooperate with international partners to increase capacity of our academic staff," Mwenifumbo said.

The comprehensive curriculum focuses on critical areas, including active learning, effective grading techniques, module-level curriculum review and integration of AI and digital technologies into education and communication.
