MUST and the Malawi Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (MWEITI) are exploring areas of collaboration that could strengthen knowledge, capacity and transparency in Malawiโ€™s natural resource sector.
During a meeting on September 12, 2026, in Lilongwe, the two institutions agreed to collaborate around MUST's โ€œAdvancing Malawiโ€™s Critical Minerals Strategy through Data, Value Addition and Energy Systems Planningโ€ project.
The meeting provided an opportunity for MUST to introduce the project to MWEITI and explore possible areas of partnership in its implementation.
MWEITI is a national initiative implemented in collaboration with Ministry of Finance to promote open, transparent and accountable management of Malawiโ€™s natural resources, including minerals and forestry.
Speaking during the meeting, MWEITI Disclosure Manager Olesia Tolochko said there are several areas where the two institutions can work together, particularly in capacity building and other initiatives aimed at strengthening knowledge and practices in the natural resources sector.
Emmanuel Chinkaka, Project Coordinator and Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at MUST, commended MWEITI for the engagement opportunity.
"The meeting has opened up opportunities for the two institutions to identify areas of mutual interest and develop partnerships that can contribute to sustainability and impact of the project," said Chinkaka.
The engagement marks another step in MUSTโ€™s efforts to bring together key stakeholders in advancing Malawiโ€™s critical minerals agenda through research, data, innovation and strategic partnerships.
Through such collaborations, MUST continues to position research and scientific knowledge as important tools for supporting informed decision-making and sustainable management of Malawiโ€™s natural resources.
