MUST has welcomed proposed reforms aimed at increasing local processing and value addition in Malawiโ€™s mining sector.
The information is based on a report published on Ministry of Mining media platforms.
Speaking during a consultation meeting which held on September 30, 2026, on the proposed amendments to the Mines and Minerals Act, 2023, and the draft Value Addition Regulations, Executive Dean of the Ndata School of Climate and Earth Sciences at MUST, Associate Professor Chikondi Chisenga, who also represented the academia, welcomed the proposed reforms.
Dr Chisenga said Malawi is losing significant value from its mineral resources because much of the countryโ€™s minerals are processed outside.
โ€œThe proposed reforms could help Malawi gain more from its mineral resources by promoting local processing and value addition,โ€ he said.
Dr Chisenga also emphasised the importance of considering contributions from stakeholders, including academia, as the Government finalises the proposed amendments and regulations.
The consultations brought together stakeholders from across the mining sector to discuss the proposed reforms and their implications for Malawiโ€™s mineral resource development.
