Malawi University of Science & Technology (MUST) Vice Chancellor Professor Address Mauakowa Malata has been appointed and inaugurated into the Governing Council of one of Zambia’s leading public Universities, Mulungushi University.
Malata’s appointment follows Zambia’s cabinet approval which was chaired by its Head of State, Edgar Lungu in August this year.
Announcing the appointment, Zambia’s Ministry of Higher Education said the development means that Malata is now member of the governing council of the University, and would also represent higher education institutions outside Zambia.
“I am confident that you will contribute to the establishment, operations, and development of the Higher Education sector, in general and in Mulungushi University in particular,” said Minister of Higher Education Dr Eng. Brian Mushimba in the letter.
The appointment is for a period of three years, during which time, Malata will also be chairing audit and risk, as well as sit on appointments and promotions committee.
Mulungushi University boasts of over 118 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, 462 staff complement, 6000 active students and has so far graduated over 3,000 students.
Reacting to the news, Professor Malata said the appointment was a demonstration of trust and confidence in not only her abilities, but also that of the academic sector in Malawi.
An advocate for girls and women empowerment through education, Professor Malata says she hopes the appointment would unlock more opportunities for further empowerment of women and girls towards greater goals in the academic sector.
“I am deeply humbled with this appointment and I do hope that through it, we can share more knowledge and skills and that more networks and collaborations between Malawi and Zambia can be enhanced,” she said.
She will continue to head MUST whilst only visiting Mulungushi University in her new role.
Among numerous accolades to her name, Prof Malata has spearheaded the development and implementation of various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the fields of health, science, innovation and technology.
She is also a renowned international speaker, author and editor of various journals in the field of health, nursing, midwifery, and health workforce.–Nation Online
