Joseph Issa

Joseph is a Research Fellow at the centre and holds MSc in Food Science and Nutrition from North Carolina State University, USA. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College. He is currently studying towards a PhD in Food Science and Nutrition at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya. His PhD research is on “Effects of different cooking methods on nutrients bioaccessibility, antinutrients content and bioactive compounds in traditional leafy vegetables from Malawi”. Joseph is an experienced Food Scientist who has specialized training for the food processing industry. He has worked at the MIRTDC as a Principal Research Officer. While at MIRTDC, he initiated and facilitated projects in areas of food processing and nutrition to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Malawi with grants from COMSIP, LDF, RLEEP, and TEVET among others. He has accumulated skills in research proposal development and analysis of quantitative data.

  • Toxicological and nutritional assessment of locally produced wine and other fruits products in Malawi funded by MUST research grants (2016)
  • Capacity building competitive grant “ Training the next generation of Scientists” provided by Carnegie Cooperation of New York through the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM); (2017).
