On October 15, 2025, second year Manufacturing Engineering student at MUST, Innocent Mandili, emerged overall winner of the prestigious SEACon Innovation Competition and the ESG award held in Sandton, South Africa.

He was chosen to represent Malawi and the SADC region at the final competition after months of intense competition with outstanding innovators from across Africa.

He won with his Thermo Elstove, an innovation that cooks while producing electricity.

According to Mandili, the Thermo Elstove aims to provide inexpensive and sustainable energy solutions.

For winning, Mandili received a trophy and will also get technical assistance to expand the effect of his innovation in Malawi and beyond Africa, in addition to a substantial amount of money.

To increase awareness and accessibility to this cutting-edge energy solution, Mandili intends to scale up production of the Thermo Elstove through his firm, MI Technologies and Innovation.

"We will continue with our research and development while collaborating with local and international partners," he said.

This milestone highlights Malawi's progress in sustainable development and youth-driven inventions, which are shared and encouraged at MUST to help mould the minds of the youth.
