On October 16, 2025, staff and students in Mathematical Sciences at MUST visited students at Goliati CDSS to inspire them to embrace the subject.

Led by their lecturer, Dr Symon Chibaya, the team of vibrant Mathematical Sciences students urged the young scholars to stop looking at Maths as a difficult subject "as it is a gateway to success".

โ€œMathematics becomes easier when you love it and practise it every day,โ€ Dr Chibaya told the excited students as he shared his remarkable journey to becoming a Doctor in Mathematics.

He also revealed that beginning next semester, the team will introduce free part-time mathematics lessons, which will be conducted by MUST Mathematical Sciences students to support and mentor learners.

Dr Chibaya was accompanied by five of his students on the visit: Pythagoras Kaombe, Angella Mayere, Blessings Mtenje, Hellings Matandala, and Khumbo Awazi.

The team encouraged learners to stay focused, persistent, and confident in their mathematical abilities.

Awazi, a second-year student, reminded the learners that through daily practice and hard work, anyone can excel in mathematics.

"Mathematics is a guaranteed field because every sector in Malawi depends on it,โ€ Awazi said.

Mr Makamu, a Mathematics and Physics teacher at Goliati CDSS, thanked the MUST team for the visit, saying such initiatives motivate more students to develop a genuine interest in mathematics.

Among the inspired learners was Takondwa Chisale, a Form 4 student, who said seeing female students studying Maths and other sciences at MUST was encouraging.

"The girls in the group have inspired me to work harder and dream bigger. I never thought girls like me could study such subjects at university. I want to become one of them,โ€ she said.

The outreach by Dr Chibaya and his students is more than just a motivational session as represents a growing movement to cultivate passion, confidence, and excellence in mathematics, while promoting girlsโ€™ participation in STEM fields and nurturing Malawiโ€™s next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
