Dr David Twapokera Mzinza is a Lecturer in Immunology and Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator in the Academy of Medical Sciences at the Malawi University of Science and Technology. He is an immunologist with extensive teaching, supervision, and postdoctoral research experience acquired through collaborations with leading African and international research institutions, including the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover and the Hannover Medical School. 

Dr Mzinza obtained a PhD in Immunology from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany, an MSc in Immunology from King’s College London, UK, and a BSc in Environmental Science and Technology from University of Malawi. 

His research focuses on host-pathogen interactions, cellular immunology, and microbiome–immune interactions in infectious diseases. He has a particular interest in malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, pneumococcal disease, and emerging infectious diseases, applying advanced immunological and molecular approaches, including flow cytometry, microbial sequencing, and translational immunology methods. His research work has received funding from the Wellcome Trust Public Health and Tropical Medicine Fellowship, the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Stipendien, the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme, and the National Institute for Health and Care Research.

At MUST, Dr Mzinza contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in immunology and biomedical sciences, curriculum development, laboratory training, and postgraduate research coordination. He actively supervises MSc and PhD students working in infectious diseases, microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology.
