Program Description

Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field that applies principles of engineering and biological sciences to develop technologies and solutions that improve healthcare and medical practices. It is an exciting, comprehensive, and developing field which combines knowledge of electronics, information technology, mechanical, chemical, and materials engineering with the life sciences including medicine, biology and molecular biology. Examples of applications of biomedical engineering are the development and manufacture of biocompatible prostheses (artificial body parts, such as a leg, a heart, or a breast implant), medical devices, diagnostic devices and imaging equipment and pharmaceutical drugs. Malawi is facing challenges in designing, manufacturing, adapting, and maintaining sophisticated medical equipment. The health delivery system in Malawi needs application of engineering concepts to solve the biological and medical problems to improve human health standards through cross disciplinary activities that integrate engineering sciences and biomedical sciences. With its transformative impact on healthcare, biomedical engineering continues to be at the forefront of technological advancements, shaping the future of medicine and contributing to the well-being of individuals worldwide.
