Fourth year Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSP) students at MUST, with support from Virginia Tech’s Professor Martha Sullivan, recently joined hands to bring positive transformation to communities in Chilomoni, Blantyre.

The students invaded Chilomoni LEA School, where they painted vibrant murals carrying powerful messages of hygiene, unity, love, and fight against sexual harassment and abuse.

The murals now stand as lasting symbols of awareness, education, and inspiration for both learners and community members.

Professor Sullivan described the project as a creative and practical way of combining education with social responsibility.

“The murals not only beautify the school but also serve as daily reminders for pupils to embrace healthy practices, respect one another, and build a safer, more inclusive environment,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Gift Feston, said as young people, they believe they have a responsibility to use their skills and talents to empower communities and promote positive change

“These murals are our voice against issues that affect our society,” said Feston.

The collaboration between MUST and Virginia Tech reflects the power of international partnerships in community development. It also demonstrates how youth-led initiatives can tackle social issues while fostering creativity, leadership, and unity.

In interviews with members of the Chilomoni community, they welcomed the project, with teachers expressing gratitude for the MUST students’ efforts in creating a safe, encouraging, and learner-friendly environment.

Through the project, MUST IKSP students have not only left a mark on walls of Chilomoni LEA School but also planted seeds of change in young hearts and minds.
