Fourth year Biomedical Engineering student, Hildah Kalino, has been selected by MUST to attend the Medical Device Innovation Summer Bootcamp at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya.

The summer boot camp provides a platform for students and innovators in health technology from various universities to interact and advance health innovations.

According to Nelson Mwenifumbo, MUST Design Studio coordinator, Hildah’s selection was in recognition of her active involvement in healthcare innovation and engineering design initiatives.

“Hildah is passionate about healthcare innovation and development of locally made medical technologies aimed at improving healthcare delivery in Malawi and across Africa,” said Mwenifumbo.

“As part of a student innovation team known as Team Mavericks, she participated in the development of an automated CPAP device that enhances access to respiratory therapy. Through the innovation, the team emerged winners of the People's Choice award during the IVE Africa Healthcare Design competition.”

In addition, the team was among the finalists in the John Hopkins Healthcare Design and Global Rice360 Design competitions.

Regarding her selection, Hildah remarked: “I feel very proud and happy to represent MUST at this summer bootcamp where I will be able to interact with other innovators, hone my skills, and contribute towards the development of medical technologies that can enhance healthcare service delivery in Malawi and Africa.”

The development highlights the innovative spirit being nurtured at MUST and demonstrates the university’s commitment to producing students who are using science, technology, and innovation to solve real-world challenges.

Her participation in the bootcamp is expected to provide valuable exposure, skills and collaboration opportunities that will further strengthen her contribution to healthcare innovation in Africa.
